District: Bom Retiro – São Paulo – SP – Brazil

Location:  Guarani Street

Founded: This synagogue was founded by immigrants from Poland (Lodz, Warsaw and region) about 80 years ago. Initially located on Prates Street, and then on Correia de Melo Street (for a short time), it was installed on Guarani Street, after the purchase of a land in 1944 and the construction of the building on the site. In 1945 the synagogue was already in operation, as an institution and as a very organized Community.

Description of the building: The building of this synagogue has the similar configuration, format and design of the other synagogues of the same period. A gate and walls separated the synagogue from the street, forming a small internal space. A distribution hall led to the male section and a ladder led us to the female sector. On the walls of this hall there was a mural of remembrance and homage to deceased patrons. This situation continues today. The roof of the synagogue, above the Bimah, was made of wood with glass, detail that provided natural light in the internal space of the synagogue throughout the day. In the male section, Aron Hakodesh stood in the middle of the hall, by the left wall of the person entering the room. The wooden benches, formerly, were lined up and facing this wall. There was a small ladder and rail in front of the Aron Hakodesh, which was flanked by pilasters. The floor was also made of wood. There were the Mazalots / Zodiac signs around the Aron Hakodesh, and some paintings on the walls, such as that of Kotel Hamaaravi. The lions next to the "Tables of the Law", Maguen David, and the "Ner Tamid" above the Aron Hakodesh were present, as well as details of the wall, in the women's gallery, with paintings in their frames, and which allowed visibility to the male sector.

Current state:  With the change of the majority of visitors to other districts, the participation in the synagogue decreased, making it difficult to maintain (from the 1980s to the 2000s), and even the formation of minians. The building of the Ahavat Reim Synagogue has been little changed, despite the reforms and modernizations it has undergone. An invitation to Rabbi Pessach Kauffman, the work he does there, the reform of the synagogue, with the donation of Mr. Samuel Klein and the Korn family, and among others, made it possible for the Ahavat Reim Synagogue to be built up to this day. Rabbi Kauffman said that he initially acted in this synagogue at the Great Holidays, reactivating it, however, from 2010, when it was possible to concretize a project to revitalize the space and its operation. A refurbishment of the electrical part, kitchen, toilets and air-conditioning was made possible by Mr. Samuel Klein. In 2012 a big party was held at the time of the donation of a new Sefer Tora by the family of dr. Reinaldo Klass and a new Sefer Torah was also donated by the Safra family. Nowadays the synagogue has 3 new Torót, and also maintains the oldest ones. In 2014 a new renovation was carried out, replacing the old wooden and worn floor with a new one. The interior of Aron Hakodesh has also been redone. At this time new banches were donated by the synagogue president, mr. Samuel Korn, considering that the old wooden benches had problems. The roof of the synagogue, above Bimah, is not currently wooden with glass. Several events over the years have been held. Former attendants and relatives of the founders continue to participate in the synagogue, but also young people and relatives previously unconnected to it began to attend it. The gate and the walls that separated the synagogue from the street have already been replaced by higher walls and new gates.

Nowadays, a painted plate in the color blue, in the same color of the gates limits the vision of who walks by the Guarani Street. In the male section, the Aron Hakodesh remains in the same position at the time of construction, in the middle of the hall, on the wall to the left of who enters to the room. However, the seats are positioned towards the center of the room. The ladder and grate that lay ahead of Aron Hakodesh was removed, eliminating its separation from Bimah. The pilasters next to the Aron Hakodesh remain, now darker blue. The old Mazálot / zodiac signs are no longer present, as are some paintings on the walls. The lions that line the "Law Tables", Maguen David, and the "Ner Tamid" above of Aron Hakodesh, remain prominent. Details of the wall, in the women's gallery, remain, with paintings in their frames.
