District: Bom Retiro - São Paulo - SP - Brazil
Location: Prates Street
Founded: 1936,
Foundation Stone" in 1956, and building inauguration in 1957
Project: Sznelwar and Raw
Description of the building: Formed by Jews of
Lithuanian origin, until the year of 1957 they met in the house of Rabbi Valt.
Located at Rua Prates, the synagogue entrance leads both to the lower floor and
to the upper floor. The lower floor, one below the entrance of the street, is
destined for the “party room”, with the former wood carved Aron Hakodesh, and
Bimah at the front. As in the other synagogues, the two lions, at the top of
the Aron Hakodesh, flank the Luchót Habrit.
The Torót, inside, are very well
preserved. And various objects such as "cos yain", bessamim
containers, candelabra, are kept in a closet along with prayer books. Today, in
this space, the Shabbat and Kiddush lunches are held. A flight of stairs above the entrance of the
synagogue, is located the male sector. A central passage(corridor), covered
with a blue carpet and flanked on both sides by wooden benches, similar to the
various Ashkenazim synagogues of São Paulo, of the same construction time,
leads to Bimah and Aron Hakodesh covered by white “parochet”.
The lions drawn
on the upper wall also flank here the Luchót Habrit and the Keter above them.
The banches still have the name plates on their backs. Plates with "Ner
Zikarón" are affixed near the entrance of this floor, in tribute to the
old regulars. On the second floor of the synagogue is the women's gallery. The
same wooden benches, the fixed plates in them, and a small wall that allows
women to accompany the ceremonies, make up this space.
